The Latin name for the common bream is Abramis brama. This species is a popular choice among anglers due to its wide distribution across the UK and its ability to thrive in various water environments. Common bream are well-suited to still waters and slow-moving rivers, making them a versatile addition to many fisheries. With their schooling behaviour and distinctive deep-bodied shape, they are an accessible yet rewarding catch for anglers of all experience levels.
At our hatchery, we produce high-quality bream which are supplied to fishing clubs and commercial fisheries throughout the UK. Our carefully managed breeding programmes ensure healthy and robust fish, capable of thriving in a range of aquatic environments. By providing bream that meet rigorous standards, we support the sustainability and success of fisheries nationwide.
Bream are typically a shoaling fish and are often nicknamed ‘dustbin lids’ or ‘hoovers’. The name ‘dustbin lid’ comes from the Common Bream’s rounded shape when it reaches around 2lb in weight. The nickname ‘hoovers’ refers to their behaviour when they weigh over 1lb, as they swim in large shoals, sweeping up any bait or tasty morsels they find on the lake bed.
Some people may confuse the Common Bream with the Silver Bream. When the Common Bream is between 8-10 inches or smaller, it has a silver colour and resembles the Silver Bream. However, Silver Bream only grow to around 8 inches in length and have a much larger eye than the Common Bream.
