When these two species interbreed with the Crucian Carp, they produce a strain of fish known as the F1 hybrid. Unfortunately, the F1 hybrid tends to have a relatively short lifespan, which makes it less viable for long-term sustainability. Instead, they are committed to maintaining and breeding the native pure Crucian Carp, a species highly valued for its heritage and ecological importance. Similar in shape and colour to its goldfish relatives, this gold-coloured, elusive species is found in small ponds, lakes, canals, and slow-flowing inland rivers. The small shoals tend to avoid waterways with heavy boat traffic and can withstand poor conditions, including cold, polluted, and low-oxygen waters.
Though there is debate about their native status, crucian carp are well-established in the UK’s wildlife and are not known to have a negative impact on native species.
